Chapter Twenty-One

Barb pulled open the oven, sliding out a dozen fresh blueberry muffins. She was already dressed for work but had a pink apron on over her chino pants and loose-fitting blouse. Kimberley stood in the doorway and waited until the muffins were safely placed on the counter before she said anything. Barb lived alone as her husband had passed years before, and she didn’t want to startle her. Kimberley was dressed in her uniform. She had opted for half a can of dry shampoo rather than showering.

“Good morning,” Kimberley said as Barb removed her oven mitts.

Barb turned back and smiled. “How’d you sleep?”

“Wonderful. Thanks for letting us stay the night.”

“You’re more than welcome anytime. Here, have some coffee,” Barb said, pouring a mug and handing it over.

Kimberley took it from her and thanked her.

“The muffins will be ready to eat in just a few minutes. Where’s Jessica?”

“I’m letting her sleep a little bit longer. She was tossing and turning all night.” Kimberley took a sip of her coffee.

“Poor thing. Probably not used to the bed.” Barb poured herself a mug of coffee and took a sip. “How ya feeling today?”

Kimberley shrugged her shoulders. “I don’t know if I’m doing the right thing?”

“I don’t think there’s a right thing or a wrong thing, Kimberley. I’m all for loyalty, but your mother standing by David… well, only a few words come to mind, and none of them are good.” Barb shook her head.

“Is it wrong of me to keep Jessica away from her?” Kimberley tilted her head. The night before she was sure of her decision, but now she felt guilty.

“Your mother isn’t thinking clearly. So, no, I don’t think it’s wrong of you. If she really wants to be in yours and Jessica’s lives, then that’s her decision to make not yours. She needs to stand by you two, not that murderer.” Barb twisted her lips.

Kimberley’s phone buzzed. She pulled it from her utility belt. On the screen read, We got the report back on Benjamin Fry. Get here as soon as you can.

“It’s Sheriff Walker. He needs me in the office.” Kimberley looked up at Barb.

“You go ahead. I’ll get Jessica ready and take her to daycare.”

“Are you sure?” Kimberley placed her mug on the counter.

“Absolutely. Now go. I’ve got everything taken care of here.” Barb shooed Kimberley away with a flick of her hands and a big smile.

Kimberley smiled back and took off out of the house.
